State visit of the President of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Azerbaijan

On June 22, 2026, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov departed for a state visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan.

At the Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, officials of the friendly nation and members of the Turkmen delegation warmly welcomed the President of Turkmenistan.

A conversation took place at the airport between President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and an official representative of Azerbaijan.

At the Zagulba Palace, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, warmly greeted President Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

Following the official photo session against the background of the State Flags of the two countries, face-to-face talks were held between Presidents Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Ilham Aliyev.

Warmly welcoming the distinguished Turkmen guest, the leader of the neighboring country expressed gratitude for accepting the invitation to visit Azerbaijan. It was emphasized that the current visit of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov will contribute to elevating the traditionally friendly Azerbaijani-Turkmen relations to a qualitatively new level.

Thanking for the invitation to pay a state visit to the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as for the hospitality extended to the Turkmen delegation, the head of Turkmenistan noted that bilateral cooperation is developing consistently today.

As emphasized, the regular dialogue at the highest level serves as a key factor in developing interstate cooperation. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov took this opportunity to convey greetings and best wishes to the Azerbaijani leader from the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

In turn, the leader of the neighboring state extended his best wishes to the Hero-Arkadag, highlighting the immense contribution of the National Leader of the Turkmen people to strengthening Turkmen-Azerbaijani relations.

The talks then continued in an expanded format with the participation of the delegations of both countries.

President Ilham Aliyev took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Hero-Arkadag, for the decision to gift a mosque to the city of Fuzuli.

The bilateral agenda covers virtually all areas of cooperation, the head of the friendly state continued, expressing gratitude to the Turkmen side for the hospitality extended to the creative teams of Azerbaijan during the cultural days held recently in Turkmenistan.

Touching upon key global agenda issues such as transport and energy security, the leader of the neighboring country noted that Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan play a significant role in the region and the world through joint initiatives, and once again welcomed the Turkmen delegation to Azerbaijani soil.

Speaking next, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted that close ties have been established between our countries in political-diplomatic, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian fields.

Contacts at the highest level serve as a key factor in the successful development of bilateral relations, the Head of State continued.

Speaking about the cooperation of our countries on the international stage, primarily within the UN, ECO, OTS, OIC and CIS, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov thanked the Azerbaijani side for supporting Turkmenistan's neutral foreign policy course and international initiatives aimed at achieving peace and creating the necessary conditions for sustainable development.

Cooperation in the Caspian Sea was named among the priority areas of interaction. As emphasized, in this regard, it was proposed to hold a high-level meeting of the Caspian states on Caspian Sea issues in October 2026 in the "Avaza" National Tourist Zone.

Identifying the trade and economic sphere as one of the primary directions of interaction, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted with satisfaction the stable dynamics of bilateral trade turnover.

At the same time, Turkmenistan's readiness for partnership in the electric power industry was confirmed. In this context, the parties discussed the availability of opportunities for supplying electricity from our country to Azerbaijan, as well as the new 1,574-megawatt power plant currently under construction on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

It was noted that Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan, possessing advantageous geographical positions at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, could make an important contribution to the development of international transport corridors. A prime example of successful interaction is the Afghanistan–Turkmenistan–Azerbaijan–Georgia–Türkiye transport corridor.

Our countries also support the initiative to create the Caspian Sea – Black Sea transport corridor along the Turkmenistan–Azerbaijan–Georgia–Romania route. In order to intensify cooperation in the transport sector, the Head of State proposed strengthening the activities of the Turkmen-Azerbaijani Commission on Transport, Transit, and Logistics.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov also confirmed Turkmenistan's readiness for partnership in the oil and gas, chemical, and textile industries, as well as in other areas.

As noted, special importance is attached to the development of cultural and humanitarian ties.

The Head of State highlighted that a major project is currently being implemented - the construction of a mosque in the city of Fuzuli, initiated by the National Leader of the Turkmen people.

In conclusion, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov expressed his conviction that the current visit would become an important milestone in strengthening cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Azerbaijan, wishing President Ilham Aliyev sound health, happiness and great success in his state activities, as well as peace, well-being and further prosperity to the brotherly Azerbaijani people.

Next, the Presidents of the two countries took part in the ceremony marking the Republic of Azerbaijan's presentation of the oil tanker "Dostluk" as a gift to Turkmenistan.

This was followed by a ceremony for the signing of a Joint Statement and the exchange of bilateral documents, attended by the Presidents of both nations. In a formal atmosphere, Presidents Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Ilham Aliyev signed the Joint Statement.

Afterward, the heads of state addressed representatives of the press.

As part of his state visit to the neighboring country, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov visited the "Victory" memorial complex and laid a wreath in memory of the national heroes of Azerbaijan.

Then, the Head of Turkmenistan proceeded to the Alley of Honor to visit the burial site of the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev. Paying tribute to the bright memory of the outstanding political leader and statesman of Azerbaijan, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov laid a wreath.

The Head of State also honored the memory of President Ilham Aliyev's mother by laying flowers at her resting place.

An official reception was given on behalf of the Head of the Republic of Azerbaijan in honor of the President of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov.
