BIE completes working visit to Turkmenistan

The Secretary General of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), Dimitri S. Kerkentzes, has completed a working visit to Turkmenistan.

Aimed at strengthening cooperation between Turkmenistan and the BIE, the two-day visit saw high-level meetings in Ashgabat centered around Turkmenistan’s involvement in the BIE and International Exhibitions.

On 5 October, the Secretary General was received by the President of Turkmenistan, H.E. Serdar Berdimuhamedov. The two sides notably discussed Turkmenistan’s longstanding engagement in the BIE and its wider commitment to cooperation, dialogue and multilateralism.

Mr. Kerkentzes also held meetings with two Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Rashid Meredov, and the Minister of Trade and Foreign Economic Relations, Begench Gochmollayev. During the course of the meetings, Turkmenistan’s participation in Horticultural Expo 2023 Doha was highlighted, and plans for its upcoming participation in World Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai were reviewed.

Demonstrating the broad involvement of the private sector in Turkmenistan’s Expo participation, the Secretary General also met today with the Head of the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, Nokerguly Atagulyev, and the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mergent Gurdov.

The Secretary General of the BIE indicated: “As a participant in Expos, Turkmenistan distinguishes itself as an active and dedicated member of the Expo community, with regular and remarkable participations, notably in World and Specialised Expos. The BIE will continue working in close partnership with Turkmenistan as it further reinforces its engagement in these illustrious international events.”

Turkmenistan has participated in Expos since Specialised Expo 1993 in Daejeon, and has been represented with a self-built pavilion at the past three World Expos. In 2012, Turkmenistan joined the BIE in order to strengthen its involvement in the BIE and Expos.
